Professor Hartman received his Ph.D. in History from the George Washington University in 2006. He was the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark for the 2013-14 academic year. Hartman is from Denver and is married to Erica Hartman. They have two sons, Asa and Eli.
Hartman’s first book, "Education and the Cold War: The Battle for the American School," was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2008. Hartman’s second book, "A War for the Soul Of America: A History of the Culture Wars," was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2015. He is now at work on a third monograph, titled, "Marx in America." Hartman was the founding president of the Society for US Intellectual History (S-USIH), where he remains a regular writer for the award-winning S-USIH Blog. Hartman was named OAH Distinguished Lecturer for the 2015-18 period. He is generally interested in intellectual history and the the history of political culture.
