"As historians we no longer believe the famous philosopher George Santayana when he wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” No two historical moments are ever equal, and history never repeats itself. Rather, our history helps us to understand why we are the way we are today. By studying the past we learn a greater humility when approaching significant decisions in our nation’s future and understand better, we hope, how complex these issues have always been.”
