These projects were developed by Illinois High School teachers who participated in the Teaching American History Summer Institute held in August of 2004 at Illinois State University. The projects were designed to give ideas to other teachers interested in engaging their students in the "doing" of history. For an overview of the theory behind these projects Dr. Frederick Drake of Illinois State University has developed and provided a summary of First order, Second order, and Third order documents (click on first, second, or third order to see the summary).
The participants read one (or more) of six books throughout the school year and chose what book they would like to use as their topical guide to the research kits. During the institute the teachers were put into groups based on the book that they had read. There were two or three groups for each book.
