The History Department sponsors an internship program to give students the opportunities to gain practical experience in history-related institutions and activities. Students earn academic credit while furthering practical skills and exploring career options. Interns typically work with museums, historical sites, archives, and other historical agencies. They research, edit, and write, work with exhibits, artifacts, and document collections, and develop educational programs and materials. Interns can also explore how historical skills and knowledge are valuable outside of the field of history itself - on a newspaper, at a political or governmental office, in a bank, and many other places.
Students routinely report that their internships count among their most rewarding academic experiences. In general, we give students the freedom to design - in consultation with a sponsoring agency - their own internship experience.
